Dantonio endorses Maxwell at QB

Quick Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl recap: Michigan State Spartans coach Mark Dantonio benches quarterback Andrew Maxwell in the second half. Maxwell had been the Spartans' quarterback all season, but it was then-redshirt freshman Connor Cook who led Michigan State on a game-winning field-goal drive. Fast-forward a month, and Dantonio insists that Maxwell (who will be a senior in 2013) is still his guy.

"I will say this: Andrew Maxwell is still our No. 1 quarterback," Dantonio tells Joe Rexrode of the Detroit Free Press. "I think he’s proven over the long haul that, he’s been in our program for four years. I think he understands what to do, he needs to do things better at certain times, but that’s where I stand on that aspect.”

ESPN.com Big Ten blogger Brian Bennett says this is a smart move on Dantonio's part:

Experience matters

"Still, it makes sense that Maxwell would enter the spring as the No. 1 guy. After all, he started all 13 games this past season and will be a senior who has spent five years in the program. Though Cook gave the team a spark in the bowl, he only completed 4 of 11 passes for 47 yards. He and the other two youngsters will have to prove they have what it takes to beat out the veteran starter."
