ESPN 150 cornerback Maurice Smith (Sugar Land, Texas/Dulles) was planning to announce his decision at the Under Armour All-America Game in January.
He couldn't wait any longer.
Smith delivered his verbal pledge to Alabama on Thursday night. He is the 15th commit for the Crimson Tide's No. 3 ranked recruiting class of 2013.
“I knew this would be one of the biggest decisions in my life, and at 16 it seemed almost too big, and a lot of pressure,” Smith said in a statement. “But someone told me that I would know when it was right. It just felt right, with no pressure, or expectation, it is just right for me. Roll Tide.”
The four-star prospect chose Alabama over Texas, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Baylor, Nebraska, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State and more than a dozen other offers. He’s ranked No. 10 at his position and 86th in the ESPN 150.
Texas has long been Smith’s dream school, but he fell in love with the Crimson Tide during a visit to their A-Day Spring Game in April. Texas squandered its lead by waiting to offer until April 2, and Alabama had led for his pledge ever since his first trip to Tuscaloosa.
Smith, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound prospect, attended camps at Alabama on Monday and LSU on Tuesday. Instead of waiting to take his fall official visits, Smith decided it was time to pull the trigger.
