Teams still calling Tide CB pledge Smith

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Cornerback Maurice Smith (Fort Bend, Texas/Dulles) surprised even himself when he decided to commit to Alabama last month.

For that reason, he can’t say he’s surprised that college coaches weren’t done recruiting him when he made his pledge on June 8. But more than a month later, they’re still coming after him as hard as ever.

“Florida State is coming hard,” Smith said Friday at the Texas state 7-on-7 championships. “Texas and Texas A&M are still contacting me. LSU is doing the same thing. They’re not even caring about the commitment.”

That continued interest has Smith pondering which official visits he’ll take this fall.

Besides Alabama, the No. 12 ranked cornerback has a few other schools in mind.

“I’m still going to get some in. I may take all five; I don’t know right now,” Smith said. “I know there’s a couple I want to take. Right now, Bama of course. And then I want to visit Florida and Florida State. And then there’s a couple more, I haven’t decided yet.”

Smith said the three nearby programs he strongly considered – Texas, Texas A&M and LSU – likely aren’t candidates for official visits, but he won’t rule out taking unofficials to them during the season.

Despite the plans to see other schools, Smith said he’s by no means wavering in his commitment right now.

“I’m 100 percent Bama,” he said. “I don’t see myself changing. I feel real good about it.”
