GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida tight end commit Colin Thompson (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) said former Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis was a big reason he committed to Florida. Now he's excited about Weis' replacement.
ESPN.com’s SEC blogger Edward Aschoff reported that Florida will name former Boise State offensive coordinator Brent Pease its new offensive coordinator on Wednesday.
“I think it’s a great pickup for Florida,” Thompson said. “I had a chance to see Boise State play a few times. They use their tight ends a lot. They run the ball and run hard, and they throw it a lot, too. It’s a good offense, and I think he will help us get back to winning SEC and national championships.”
Boise State’s passing attack (309.38) ranked 11th nationally. Florida’s total offense (329.69) ranked 105th nationally.
Thompson is rated the No. 1 tight end and the No. 85 player in the ESPNU 150.
“It depends on who Florida gets for their new offensive coordinator,” Taylor said. “It depends on whether I like him or not. Maybe I will. But if they get someone I like then Florida is where I want to go.”
Taylor is rated the No. 4 tight end and the No. 147 player in the ESPNU 150.
Arkansas wide receiver commit Courtney Gardner (Reno, Nev./Sierra College), a 6-foot-2, 215-pound receiver who will officially visit Florida on Jan. 20., also heard the news.
“Yeah me and my boy were just talking about that,” Gardner said. “They didn’t have an offensive coordinator when they started recruiting me, but I heard that he’s an amazing coach.”
Does the hiring of Pease help Florida’s chances of landing the big receiver?
“Florida is a great school, I wouldn’t overlook them at all,” Gardner said. “It all will depend on how my visit down there goes.”
The news could also sway top wide receiver Stefon Diggs (Olney, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), who is ranked the No.10 player in the country by the ESPNU 150.
Florida was once thought to be a leader for Diggs, but after the departure of offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, the Gators seemed to fall from that perch.
Pease could bring them back.
“I just heard about it,” Diggs said. “I don’t know too much about him yet. I’m going to call my mom and we’ll do some research on him. I’m getting ready to call the Florida coaches right now, too.”
Diggs said his decision will come after signing day, but he has not picked an exact date for his announcement.
