GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gators landed only two offensive linemen in the 2012 recruiting class, but Florida may be closing in on landing its first lineman for the 2013 class.
Delray Beach (Fla.) American Heritage tackle prospect Rod Johnson holds offers from Florida, West Virginia, USF, SMU and UCF. But Johnson says one team is standing out for him right now.
"Florida is my No. 1 school right now," Johnson said. "Speed kills at Florida. They have a lot of speed on their team. If I commit to them, then I trust them to send me to the pros."
Though it appears the 6-foot-5, 271-pound Johnson is ready to make a commitment, he says that isn't quite the case.
"I'm not sure when I will commit, hopefully sooner or later," he said. "I'm not committing yet, though. I just need time."
Johnson had a chance to speak with new Floria offensive line coach Tim Davis recently and said he was impressed.
"He is a cool guy. He wished me a early happy birthday today," said Johnson who turns 18 on Saturday.
