Georgia RB has Gators on top

GAINESVILLE, FLa. -- Guyton (Ga.) South Effingham running back prospect Josh Mercer is starting to see his recruitment heat up.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound speedster, who ran a 10.59, 100-meter dash in a track meet on Thursday night, is starting to hear from schools like South Carolina, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Florida.

Mercer recently attended Florida's junior day and called it a great visit. It was also a productive visit.

"It went very well. They gave me an offer," Mercer said. "The head coach [Will Muschamp] and the running backs coach [Brian White] were saying they liked me and my family. That's when they offered me."

The Florida offer moved the Gators to the front of Mercer's list.

"They are number one," he said, "That's where I want to go. I like how they play, I like the speed, and I think that would be a good spot for me."

Mercer said Florida would like to see him play in person in a game or in camp before pushing for his commitment.

Florida already has verbal commitments from running backs Adam Lane (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven HS) and Kelvin Taylor (Belle Glades, Fla./Glades Day), but Mercer said he's not afraid of the competition.

"That doesn't bother me," Mercer said. "I'm going to have to compete with them two, and it would make everybody better."

As a junior Mercer rushed for 1,359 yards and 20 touchdowns on 192 carries. He also added 349 return yards and 189 receiving yards.
