Top prospects countdown - No. 9

There are six or seven spots left in Florida's 2013 class and a few needs to fill. Some of the top prospects in the nation are considering the Gators, and it would be difficult to turn them away. So GatorNation is ranking the top 12 uncommitted prospects for Florida this week, two-a-day. We’ll also add comments by some of our Insider subscribers from The Chompions Club premium message board.

No. 9

Derek Tyson's pick: S Marcell Harris (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) or S Leon McQuay III (Seffner, Fla./Armwood)

OK, so I may have cheated by picking two players at my No. 9 spot -- but that's because I believe Florida will only take only take one of these talented players. Harris is a big, physical safety who could develop in to a linebacker if he continues to grow. Harris has visited Florida several times, and the Gators are near the top of his list. Don't count out Florida State or Texas, though. Harris said he would like to make a decision by the end of summer or early in his senior year.

McQuay is more of a free safety with great range and ball skills. The 6-foot-2, 183-pound prospect hasn't said much about his recruitment recently, but Florida, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Michigan, Notre Dame, Miami and USC are just some of the schools in the mix. McQuay will take all five of his official visits at the beginning of the football season and make his decision shortly thereafter.

Jeff Barlis’ pick: QB Ryan Buchanan (Jackson, Miss./Jackson Prep)

This pick was originally made with Florida's top quarterback target, Cooper Bateman, in mind. Last Monday, he picked Alabama. Then it was Cody Thomas. He committed to Oklahoma. Finally, I moved Kevin Olsen in, and within hours his verbal went to Miami, Fla. So don't be surprised if Buchanan commits at any moment. In all seriousness, however, it had to be unsettling for the Gators and (maybe more so) their fans to see their top three QB prospects come off the board in rapid succession.

Enter Buchanan. He's a big, strong-armed pro-style quarterback who has gotten a lot more popular as schools like Florida have found the pool of prospects thinning. Buchanan recently earned an offer from offensive coordinator Brent Pease after throwing in front of the UF coach at practice. Pease no doubt wants to bolster depth at his most important position, because there is no telling what could happen to the roster if or when one of this fall's contenders wins the starting quarterback job.

Readers’ pick: DE/LB Jonathan Allen (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge)

secrocks2000 - Would give (Will) Muschamp some flexibility and can be the buck player he is looking for in this class. With only Fowler and (Ronald) Powell pegged at the buck, Allen could provide depth at the position.

DK_Thompson - I think he will make a great buck at the next level. With (Dante) Fowler coming in, Allen fell on my list.

scooterp518663 - Depth at the buck is a concern. And if Powell enters the draft early, then it is a huge concern.

RussianTurtles - Another good DL where we need bodies.

chris smith 24 - Need depth at the buck, and he would fit that position nicely.
