GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gators have had their ups and downs in recruiting this past week. Florida commits Kelvin Taylor, Vernon Hargreaves III, Caleb Brantley, Rod Johnson, Alvin Bailey and Keanu Neal all played for Team Highlight in the Under Armour All-America game on Friday, and all of the Florida commits had a solid week of practice. They capped it off by earning a 16-3 victory over Team Nitro.
Brantley, a four-star defensive tackle, unexpectedly decommitted from Florida on Wednesday and started planning visits to LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma. After speaking with several Florida coaches Friday after the game, Brantley decided to recommit to the Gators.
"I sat and talked to all the coaches except for coach [Will] Muschamp and coach [Dan] Quinn and I realized this is where I want to be," Brantley said. "I went with my heart."
Hargreaves, a five-star prospect and the No. 3-ranked player in the country, backed up his high rankings with an MVP performance in the game. Hargreaves had four open-field tackles, an interception and two pass breakups. Highlight head coach Herm Edwards had high praise for his star defensive back.
"He's a good player," Edwards said. "You could tell the first day. He has a great mindset but he also asks good questions. He plays with his cleats in the ground, has great eyes, good anticipation and instincts -- something you can't coach -- and he has good hands. That pick he made, that's a big-time catch. I should have put him on offense, maybe we would have moved the ball a little bit."
With the postseason games over with, Florida is coming down the homestretch to signing day. The Gators hosted four-star defensive tackle Montravius Adams this weekend. Alabama defensive end commit DeMarcus Walker was scheduled to visit the Gators, but after talking with Alabama coaches after the UA Game, the ESPN 150 defensive end decided not to go to UF.
Four-star wide receiver Demarcus Robinson was planning to make his announcement at the Army Bowl, but decided to delay his decision and will enroll at either Florida, Clemson or Notre Dame on Tuesday.
After a busy recruiting weekend for the Gators, things will heat up once again on Tuesday, as 2014 Watch List defensive back Duke Dawson will make a commitment between Florida and Florida State.
