GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- GatorNation brings you the latest installment of Chomp Confidential, a look inside Florida football recruiting for GatorNation subscribers only. As with anything exclusive, what's reported in the weekly Chomp Confidential must stay here. A few things discussed in this week's update:
• The latest on the quarterback situation
• Will a commit qualify?
• Derek's mock class
Check out the weekly Chomp Confidential.
It's pretty clear to see that new offensive coordinator Brent Pease would like to add a quarterback to this recruiting class. Skyler Mornhinweg, a Penn State commit, is the most likely candidate and he could commit to Florida as soon as this morning.
Will his decision be made public? That is unclear at this point, but if Deltona (Fla.) Trinity Christian Paxton Lynch doesn't visit this weekend, that would be a clear sign Florida has probably landed Mornhinweg.
Florida could still add another signal-caller. Pasco (Fla.) Pasco HS quarterback Jacob Guy has been offered a walk-on spot for the Gators.
At any rate, Florida will enter spring with three scholarship quarterbacks, and it's possible one of the three could decide to transfer. Adding a quarterback in this class is insurance for next year.
LB commit in danger of not qualifying?
Longtime Florida linebacker commit Jeremi Powell still has some work to do before he qualifies academically.
"I've got to do good in this semester and I've still got to take my ACTs and stuff," Powell said. "I've taken it, but I haven't passed it yet."
Don't count Powell out yet, however. As long as he makes good grades this semester and raises his test score slightly, he should be fine. It's worth keeping an eye on, though
Mock Class: Predicting the unpredictable
I'll be honest, I've never been a big fan of doing mock classes, because so much can change between now and signing day. But I realize this is for fun. As of Thursday night, with all the information I have gathered, this is who I believe will wind up in Florida's class:
Skyler Mornhinweg ****
Matt Jones ****
Colin Thompson ****
Kent Taylor ****
D.J. Humphries (enrolled) *****
Jessamen Dunker (enrolled) ****
Jake Meador ***
Note: I was very close to typing Avery Young instead of Meador, but in the end I think Young ends up at Georgia.
Latroy Pittman (enrolled) ****
Stefon Diggs (announces Feb. 10) ****
Note:: Like Avery Young, I was very close to adding Nelson Agholor to this class. I think it's 50-50 with USC and Florida right now. With USC having his last visit, I believe the Trojans have a slight edge.
Marcus Maye ****
Rhaheim Ledbetter ****
Willie Bailey (enrolled) ***
Brian Poole ****
Tracy Howard ****
Jeremi Powell ****
Antonio Morrison (enrolled) ***
Schyler Miles ***
Josh Harvey-Clemons ****
Note: I'm not as confident in Harvey-Clemons. It will be a Florida-Georgia battle, but I will give the Gators a slight advantage. Just a gut feeling.
Jonathan Bullard ****
Alex McCalister ****
Bryan Cox Jr. ***
Dante Fowler Jr. ****
Quinteze Williams ****
Note: Fowler is my surprise signing-day switch. I believe the Gators will be able to flip him on Feb. 1. Also, this mock was drawn up before the news of Rutgers coach Greg Schiano leaving to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. DE Darius Hamilton, who is down to Rutgers and Florida, could very well end up in this class after this latest development.
Jafar Mann ***
Dante Phillips ****
Damien Jacobs (enrolled) NR/juco
Austin Hardin ***
This class would end up with one five-star, 18 four-stars, seven three-stars and one unrated juco for a total of 27 signees. This would certainly propel Florida toward the top of the class rankings. In my opinion, the Gators could end up with ESPNU's No. 2 class in the nation. Obviously things can change between now and signing day, and in some instances this was based on educated guesses more than inside information. Check in on our message boards in one week, and we can discuss how I did.
