GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- It’s time to dip into the GatorNation recruiting mailbag and answer your questions. Because of the amount of questions we’ve received, we won’t be able to get to all of them today -- but we encourage you to post your questions on our Insider fan forum, The Chompions Club.
eastorwestgatorsarethebest: With Montravius Adams visiting UF this weekend, what are our chances of securing this talented DT?
A: Florida still has a long way to go with the four-star defensive tackle, but this unofficial visit is certainly a good start. There are still several months before signing day, and if Florida can convince him to take an official visit later in the year then the Gators are right in the mix for him. I still believe Auburn is the team to beat here, but if the Tigers continue to struggle this year the Gators could sneak in and make a play for the No. 11-ranked player in the country.
briamos1: DT, What were your thoughts on the Derrick Henry (Yulee, Fla./Yulee) vs. Kelvin Taylor (Belle Glades, Fla/Glades Day) game last week? How did KT look? How does he fit in to our offense and do you see him contributing early? Do you see Henry moving to DE or LB at the next level?
A: In my opinion Taylor is the real deal. There is a reason he is the No. 1-ranked running back in the country. Yulee continually stacked the box and Taylor still managed to grind out 223 rushing yards. With Mike Gillislee graduating, Taylor will have every opportunity to come in and compete for playing time early on. Same goes for four-star running back commit Adam Lane (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven). Henry was just as impressive in the game. He has a rare combination of size and athleticism that you just don't see every day. I'm no scout, but it appears that Henry has at least earned the right to compete for a job at running back before moving him to another position.
anoblejax: It looks like the focus is switching to the 2014 recruits. Which Gators targets do you see who will end up being highly rated?
A: Well, to give you some sort of idea, here's a list of 2014 prospects who are on the ESPN Watch List and are visiting for the LSU game Saturday: WR Johnnie Dixon, QB Will Grier, DB Duke Dawson, OL Garrett Brumfield, RB Tony James, ATH Jalen Hurd, DB Nick Glass (UGA commit), OL Reilly Gibbons and WR Moral Stephens. Among those not visiting: wide receiver Artavis Scott, OL Corey Martinez, WR Corey Holmes and OL Mason Cole, but they are also on the Watch List and Florida is very much involved for all of them.
kendallland1: With Florida's fast start to the season, we're kind of seeing some guys maybe pick up their interest level in the Gators again. How do you feel a Gators win or loss against LSU will affect recruiting with guys like Greg Gilmore, Adams, Laremy Tunsil, Marcell Harris, and even committed guys like Alex Anzalone, DeMarcus Walker and Jalen Ramsey?
A: As long as it's a competitive game, I don't think it matters too much who wins or loses. The recruits just want to see an exciting competitive game with a good atmosphere. Now if Florida were to somehow win, then it would certainly help the atmosphere in the stadium and therefore create a fun environment for recruits in attendance. Overall, it's always going to be a positive thing in recruiting if you win, but a close loss wouldn't be devestating by any means for the top recruits.
eastorwestgatorsarethebest: Any idea who the top QB will be in the country? I know it is too early and Grier is the top QB in the southeast. Just want to know if anyone in the country has separated himself from the rest?
A: Good question, I deferred to ESPN National Recruiting Analyst Tom Luginbill for his opinion. Here are some of the top QBs he listed who have a chance to be the No. 1 signal-caller in the country for next year: Justice Hansen, DeShaun Watson, DJ Gillins, Drew Barker, Tyler Harris, Grier, Caleb Henderson and Chandler Kincade.
kendallland1: Is Grier the top QB candidate on UFs board for '14? Who is Florida's top target outside of the QB position?
A: Right now, in my opinion, yes Grier is the top quarterback target for UF next year. The Gators have also offered Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) western quarterback Wade Freebeck, but it still appears as if Grier is the top guy. Both players will be at the game Saturday. It might be too early to tell who is the top target outside the QB position. A lot will depend on whether guys transfer or enter the NFL draft. But there are certainly some top players such as WRs Dixon and Scott, DE Da'Shawn Hand, S Quin Blanding, RB Leonard Fournette, OL Jamarco Jones and DE Bryson Allen-Williams who are near the top of Florida's list at their positions.
