FSU opens at No. 7 in AP poll

Florida State will open the season ranked seventh in the AP poll, which was released Saturday.

The ranking comes as little surprise. It's the same position the USA Today Coaches' Poll has the Seminoles ranked in its preseason poll.

The No. 7 spot is down one spot from where Florida State opened the 2011 season, in which the Seminoles followed up huge expectations with four losses and a final ranking in the AP poll of 24th.

While the ranking may be lower to start 2012, the expectations have likely increased, and that's fine with head coach Jimbo Fisher.

"Expectation is just another way of saying you have ability," Fisher said. "To me, it's a great word. If there's not expectations or potential, then I have no chance to win."

Florida State is one of three ACC teams ranked in the top 25 by the AP. Clemson, the defending conference champion, is ranked 14th, and Virginia Tech comes in at No. 16.

North Carolina, Georgia Tech and N.C. State also received votes in the poll.

In-state rival Florida, whom the Seminoles will play to close out the regular season, opens as the No. 23 team, according to the AP.
