Wood, two UGA signees go in Round 2

Three Georgia signees or active players came off the board in Tuesday’s second round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Signees Joe DeCarlo and Duane Underwood were both picked early in the second round, while All-SEC pitcher Alex Wood went late in the round.

DeCarlo was the fourth pick of the day -- 64th overall -- when the Seattle Mariners picked him Tuesday. He was followed closely by fellow Bulldogs signee Duane Underwood, a pitcher/outfielder who went 67th overall to the Chicago Cubs.

Underwood would likely be a two-year player if he plays in college, but the Cubs drafted the 17-year-old as a raw pitching prospect with a live fastball.

“I think this is an upside pick,” Baseball America draft analyst Jim Callis said. “I think he was in the first-round mix for a couple of teams and he was inconsistent. You can see this guy throw 96, 98 (mph) on the right day and you could see other days where he couldn’t get the ball anywhere near the strike zone.”

As the second round neared its end, the Atlanta Braves grabbed left-hander Wood with the 85th overall pick.

Wood went 7-3 with a 2.73 ERA this spring, earning second-team All-SEC honors, but many draft analysts predict he will be a reliever with closer upside in the pros.

“I talked to scouts who simply loved his stuff,” MLB.com draft analyst Jonathan Mayo said. “He was a guy where there was a lot of disappointment around the country with college pitching -- guys who didn’t separate themselves, the lack of true Friday night starters -- and Wood was kind of the opposite, a guy who started out as being ‘Oh OK.’

“And then he’s already had Tommy John surgery, so there’s some medical questions. His delivery’s kind of funky. But pure stuff-wise from the left side, there is a lot to like in a guy who really moved up draft boards in a hurry this spring.”

Georgia had only one signee -- outfielder Byron Buxton, who went second overall to Minnesota -- selected Monday night in the first round and sandwich picks, comprising the draft’s first 60 picks.

Rounds 2-15 will continue today, while Rounds 16-40 will conclude the draft on Wednesday.
