UGA suspends Vasser for two games

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia revealed Thursday that it will be without yet another potential defensive starter when it opens the season.

UGA coach Mark Richt confirmed that outside linebacker Chase Vasser is suspended for the Sept. 1 opener against Buffalo and the Sept. 8 visit to Missouri following a DUI arrest in May in Atlanta.

“Chase Vasser will serve a two-game suspension as per our Athletic Association policy,” Richt said in a university statement.

After appearing in 12 games -- starting three -- and recording 16 tackles last season, Vasser completed spring practice as a starting outside linebacker following previous starter Cornelius Washington’s shift to defensive end.

Vasser is the third Bulldogs defensive starter known to have been arrested since the end of last season. Cornerback Sanders Commings will also serve a two-game suspension following an arrest for his role in a domestic dispute in downtown Athens. Fellow cornerback Branden Smith was arrested for marijuana possession during spring break, although Georgia has not publicly revealed Smith’s punishment for that incident.

All-America safety Bacarri Rambo and linebacker Alec Ogletree also reportedly faced suspensions following failed drug tests, although Georgia has never acknowledged any disciplinary issues or punishments for either player.
