Offensive tackle Nolan Kelleher’s (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) first conversation with Georgia offensive line coach Will Friend is one he will remember for a long time.
“Coach Friend wanted me to call him so I gave him a call during school and he just offered me there,” Kelleher said. “He said, ‘I saw your film and we really liked it and we need more people like you around here.’ It surprised the heck out of me. I gave him a call out of one of my teacher’s classrooms and my teacher was absolutely astonished that I got an offer just right there. It was awesome. They had sent me a lot of mail but it was not anything personal so all of a sudden this came out of nowhere. I am really excited about that one.”
The Georgia offer comes on the heels an offer from Florida State.
“I had been getting a lot of mail from Georgia and I guess they saw [the FSU offer] and that helped contribute to it,” the 6-foot-5, 285-pound lineman said. “All of the other schools have offered me based on my film. Florida State did too. It has just sort of been piling up.”
Growing up in Mount Pleasant -- a vacation destination just north of Charleston, S.C. -- can make for a letdown when visiting schools not on the coast. But Kelleher is anxious to see Athens.
“I have heard from many people that it is probably the best college town and that it’s just such a fun campus with great football and great academics,” Kelleher said. “Everything is just awesome about it. It is just a huge opportunity for me. I have some friends that just really love Georgia. I am really interested in the school itself.”
The talented lineman, who has slimmed down in the offseason, could be in for even more surprise offers the way his recruitment is trending.
“Clemson just sent me a friend invite on Facebook so I am not sure what might be coming that way,” Kelleher said. “Auburn is sending me more and more mail too. I am really surprised at how it is going.”
Kelleher has already nabbed offers from Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Duke, Connecticut, NC State and Virginia Tech.
