Johnny Jones: The reaction

When LSU hired Johnny Jones as its new basketball coach Friday, it brought reaction from around the program and college basketball online and in social media. Here's a sampling of the reaction:

Johnny O'Bryant, LSU forward (Twitter): Imma finish what I started, not leaving ... Don't believe the rumors...

There has been speculation that O'Bryant, the former McDonald's All American, might leave LSU after his freshman season to test the NBA waters. This tweet was sent out Saturday morning.

Mark Gottfried, North Carolina State (Twitter): So happy for my former asst Johnny Jones who is new coach @LSUbasketball. Phenomenal coach and friend. Could not have made a better hire.

Jones was an assistant coach under Gottfried at Alabama in 2000-01.

Dick Vitale, ESPN color analyst (Twitter): Gr8 hire by LSU in Johnny Jones-will recruit big time players.Personality +

Dicky V. can Twitter shorthand better than most high school girls.

Scott Cross, Head coach at Texas-Arlington (Twitter): So happy for Johnny Jones!!!

UTA, a Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex rival of Jones' North Texas program, won the Southland Conference regular season title in 2012 and Cross' name has come up in some searches at larger programs.

Ryan Price, assistant coach, Southern University (Twitter): Congrats to my fam/godfather Johnny Jones on being hired as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at LSU. The perfect man for that job.

Price, the son of Tic Price (the former New Orleans, Memphis and McNeese State head coach) is working across town from Jones' new job at Baton Rouge's "other" Division I university. Jones worked with Price's father as an assistant at Memphis and was interim head coach for a season when the elder Price resigned. Later, Tic Price was an assistant for Jones for a year at North Texas.

Dale Brown, former LSU coach and Jones' college coach and long-time boss when Jones as an LSU assistant (Facebook): I compliment Joe Alleva for making a through search with his staff (without hiring an expensive search firm) to find the very best basketball coach for LSU, Louisiana and all the fans scattered around the world.

We all got much more than a basketball coach. We got a person with integrity, humor, superb work ethic, strong willed, a unifier, a disciplinarian and bright and pleasant gentleman.

Hold on your seats, this will be an exciting ride!

Brown, never at a loss for words, was an advocate for Jones' candidacy in 2008 and again this year.

Bob Starkey, former LSU assistant coach now an assistant women's coach at Texas A&M (via his blog): For all of us in the LSU men's basketball family, (Friday) evening created a watershed moment. It will be an evening we will long remember because of our love for the LSU men's basketball program and especially because of our love for Johnny Jones."

Starkey was on Brown's staff at the height of the LSU men's program's power in the 1990s and was later on the women's staff during its best run in the 2000s. He was interim head coach after Pokey Chatman resigned in 2007.

LSU compliance (Twitter): Enjoyed meeting with new @LSUBasketball coach Johnny Jones this morning. Already out on the road recruiting.

Jones reputation is as a relentless, and effective, recruiter. The tweet, from Saturday morning, showed that Jones has wasted no time going to work at his specialty.

Ronald Dupree, former LSU player (Twitter): well boys!! There it is! Johnny Jones is coming back home. #LSUfamily

A tweet moments after news of Jones' hiring leaked. The family sentiment was expressed by several LSU ex-players and coaches while expressing their support for Jones during the search.

Garrett Temple, former LSU player (Twitter): Welcome home Johnny. #GeauxTigers” YESSIIRR

Temple's father, Collis Temple, Jr., advocated the hiring of Jones. This was in reaction to Dupree's tweet.
