2014 position preview: Quarterbacks

There's one tricky factor that makes it tough to evaluate where LSU might be in terms of recruiting a quarterback for 2014:

What, exactly, will the Tigers' need be at the position?

With 2013 commits Hayden Rettig and Anthony Jennings on board for this class, LSU looks to have five scholarship quarterbacks come 2014. Penn State transfer Rob Bolden, who appears headed for a redshirt season, is on schedule to be a fifth-year senior while current second-stringer Stephen Rivers and Jerrard Randall should both be juniors that year.

If they all stay in school, the Tigers would have five scholarship quarterbacks and it would be hard to imagine the position being a priority.

But this is college football and attrition is part of the deal. There's at least a decent chance that LSU will lose somebody and feel a need for a new guy under center. One offer for the 2014 class is already out, so let's look at that offer and other possibilities:

Chase Litton (Tampa, Fla./Wharton): Tall and with a strong arm, Litton already has an LSU offer and interest from several other major programs. Playing in the highly competitive Tampa Bay area, Litton has completed 113 of 211 passes for 1,898 yards with 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions for a 7-2 team.

Drew Barker (Hebron, Ky./Conner): Another big, pro-style quarterback who has SEC offers from Kentucky and South Carolina, Barker has also been in contact with LSU quarterbacks coach Steve Kragthorpe, the former Louisville coach. A member of the ESPN Watch List, Barker is classified as a pocket passer -- although he has been one of his school's primary running threats this season, rushing for touchdowns in every game. He has already made an unofficial visit to Notre Dame.

Donovan Isom (Destrehan, La./Destrehan): Jordan Jefferson was the last Louisiana quarterback to sign with LSU. If 2014 is to produce the next one, many think it might be Isom who, like Jefferson, is from Destrehan. A big, strong pocket thrower, Isom made his mark this season throwing passes to Jefferson's younger brother, LSU commit Rickey Jefferson.

Quentin Gibson (Marrero, La./Archbishop Shaw): While Isom is seen as the state's top passer, some think Gibson might be the best. Smaller than the other quarterbacks listed here, Gibson has nonetheless posted a terrific passing season as a junior.
