Tales From the Road: Michigan

Every Wednesday, WolverineNation will take a look at Michigan's week in recruiting in Tales From The Road.

This week's targets: Now that defensive back Jabrill Peppers (Paramus, N.J./Paramus Catholic) is on board, the Michigan commits are out targeting some of the top remaining targets. It looks as though linebacker Chase Winovich (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) is in line to make his decision the soonest of the remaining targets. Winovich will be visiting Pitt and could make a decision shortly after that. If Michigan were to land Winovich, that would give the Wolverines 11 commitments for the 2014 class, which means that spots are going to start getting tight. That could help speed the process along for some of the other targets, but doesn't guarantee that. If Michigan could lock up the majority of this class before the season starts, and do so with some of the top-ranked players in the country, it would be quite impressive.

Area of interest: California is always loaded with top quarterback talent, and the 2015 class in California could be a big area of focus for Michigan. It's been a while since the Wolverines have had a lot of success in California, but if Michigan can continue to improve on the field, 2015 might be where the Wolverines start to see results. The coaches have already offered 2015 quarterback Josh Rosen (Bellflower, Calif./St. John Bosco) and are targeting some big prospects. Kevin Dillman (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) and Kyle Kearns (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) are two prospects that have already been hearing from Michigan. Add in Ricky Town (Ventura, Calif./St. Bonaventure) and Sheriron Jones (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde), and there are plenty of options for Michigan going forward. All of those names will be big prospects nationally and will be tough to land.

Word on the street: With Peppers committed, many fans have asked how his decision to join the Wolverines will impact this class going forward. Having Peppers in the fold means that Michigan has added yet another recruiter to the arsenal. Michigan's other commitments, including Michael Ferns (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville), Wilton Speight (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School) and Drake Harris (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) have all been recruiters for Michigan. Having the No. 2-ranked player in the country recruit for you can hold a ton of weight with other prospects. Peppers said after his commitment that he is targeting defensive end Da'Shawn Hand (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) and Malik McDowell (Detroit/Loyola).

What to watch: The Columbus NFTC is this weekend and is always filled with top talent. This year Da'Shawn Hand is making the trip up north to attend the event. He will undoubtedly be the headliner, and since he is getting closer to narrowing his list, he will have all eyes on him. The interesting part of this camp is that it will be held on Ohio State's campus. Hand said he might take a visit to Ohio State on Saturday, the day before the event, but is unsure at this time. The Buckeyes aren't in his top group for now, so that would be an opportunity for the coaching staff to try to get back in his good graces if he does visit.
