2013 RB excited about Michigan

With 2013 recruiting about to be in full force, it’s time to start paying attention to the prospects Michigan will be targeting. A main need in 2013 for the Wolverines will be running back, and three offers have already been extended.

Ty Isaac (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), Wyatt Shallman (Novi, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and Deveon Smith (Warren, Ohio/Howland) are the three prospects current with Michigan offers in their class.

Smith is a 5-foot-11, 205-pound back who has expressed a lot of interest in Michigan. The Wolverines were the first school to offer, so that has stuck out in his mind thus far.

“It means a lot that they offered first. They took the first step out of all the teams in the nation,” he said. “They really were looking at me, so I’m going to take that in a lot.”

Smith wasn’t the only one excited by the Michigan offer in his household. It just so happens that his father grew up in the state of Michigan and is a fan of the Wolverines.

“We both grew up Michigan fans, so we were all excited,” he said. “My whole family was happy for me because it was my first offer and it was something I was dreaming about.”

He still has family in Michigan who could eventually help the Wolverines with Smith’s recruitment.

“I can go up whenever I want because my brother and grandma live in Michigan,” he said. “My grandma lives in Detroit, and my brother lives by Ann Arbor.”

While Michigan is his first and only offer so far, Smith says he wants to wait and see what other programs decide to recruit him. Schools such as Penn State and Ohio State have recently been showing interest in the ESPNU 150 Watch List running back.

He’s a big back who has all of the abilities to be successful in a pro-style system, but says he isn’t partial to one offense over another.

“I don’t mind the spread; I love catching the ball so I think I could do both,” he said. “I’ll go wherever I feel comfortable, and wherever the environment is right.”
