U-M targets attend The Opening

With limited spots left and still quite a few top prospects on the board, Michigan is hoping for any advantage to land the last two commitments for 2013. If only there was a way for some of the Wolverines’ top remaining prospects to take a trip with seven Michigan commits for four days.

Oh, there is? That’s right, defensive backs Kendall Fuller (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) and Leon McQuay (Seffner, Fla./Armwood), wide receivers Laquon Treadwell (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) and Alvin Bailey (Seffner, Fla./Armwood), defensive end Joe Mathis (Upland, Calif./Upland) and running back Derrick Green (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) will all be attending The Opening from Thursday through Sunday in Beaverton, Ore.

Seven of Michigan’s commitments, including recruiter extraordinaire Shane Morris (Warren, Mich./DeLaSalle), will also be at the invite-only camp.

What better way for Michigan to try to secure one of Treadwell or Bailey than having them catch passes for four days from Morris? The receiver targets will also get a chance to go up against defensive back Jourdan Lewis in drills, and Green will most likely go up against Michigan linebacker commit Mike McCray (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) in one-on-ones.

It also most likely means that Mathis will get a rematch with offensive line commit David Dawson (Detroit/Cass Tech). Mathis flew in to Michigan for a camp this summer where the two faced off in a rubber tire tug of war match and one-on-ones. Dawson might have been given the slight edge overall, but it was very close.

McQuay, Bailey and Treadwell have all been on campus, and Green plans on making it in to Ann Arbor on July 29 for the Big House BBQ. The timing seems to be a positive for Michigan as Green will most likely be more familiar with some of the Michigan commits that will also be attending the BBQ.

While the Michigan coaching staff won’t be at The Opening in Oregon, it’s safe to say that there will still be some major recruiting going on for the Wolverines.
