2014 WR has B1G offers, U-M on radar

The state of Florida has enough prospects to go around, but when 2014 wide receiver Austin Roberts (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) moved to Indiana it was a big deal. Roberts already holds offers from Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Miami, Purdue and Stanford.

The move from the Sunshine State up to basketball country was football related, but not for Austin.

"We moved up here around the second week of June. My dad got a job with the Colts," he said. "He coaches the tight ends there, and he was with the Buccaneers before that."

His father, Alfredo, played collegiately at Miami, and while Roberts says he doesn't currently have any favorites, his ties to the Hurricanes do make him interested.

Having a resource like his father is invaluable. Not only does he coach tight ends, which some programs are recruiting Roberts as, he also went through the recruiting process himself. At one point he even was in charge of recruiting high school prospects.

"He coached at FAU [Florida Atlantic University] in their first year," he said. "He was the recruiter for them, so I ask him how I should approach topics and how to be respectful towards coaches."

It is still early in the process, but it's safe to say the Roberts family will have a good grasp on what they'll be looking for and how the process will go. Roberts says the main focus will be on academics followed by how good the football team is.

"I'm thinking about majoring in finance, so I want a school that has a great business program," he said. "In the perfect world I'd like to commit at an all-star game, but because recruiting has changed so much I might have to do it sooner."

He's already getting a head-start on his recruitment as he says he will be in Ann Arbor on July 29 for Michigan's Big House BBQ -- a visit that might not have been possible had it not been for his family's move up north. Since he's from Florida and doesn't know much about the Wolverines, Roberts says he is hoping to find out what Michigan has to offer.

"I've been calling Coach [Curt] Mallory on a regular basis. I'm looking to learn more about the school, more about the tradition than just the Michigan and Ohio State rivalry," he said. "I do have strong interest in Michigan, but I haven't seen the school yet. I'm going off of blind faith right now, so I want to see everything."
