The Big Ten weekly baksetball coaches teleconference is on Monday mornings. Here are the key points from Michigan coach John Beilein and Indiana coach Tom Crean.
ON USING "OHIO" WHEN REFERRING TO OHIO STATE: "It just sort of happened," Beilein said. "I received no direction in those areas, no directions from anyone. Just adopted it myself."
ON SOPHOMORE GUARD EVAN SMOTRYCZ'S STRUGGLES: Beilein said it's important to remember that Smotrycz was raking in double-doubles against "another caliber level" than what Michigan is currently facing. "Nobody does that all year long," Beilein said of double-doubles. "Maybe Jared Sullinger does it, but very few are going to do that." He said the staff is making sure Smotrycz gets extra reps in practice, that he watches more game film and that he takes more ownership of his total game.
ON WHAT HE’S TAKING FROM THE FIRST INDIANA GAME: Beilein said the Hoosiers are one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country and the inside play from freshman Cody Zeller makes them very strong offensively. "It's just difficult to catch them," Beilein said. "They're on the move so quickly. They just do so many things where you have to be very focused in a speedy fashion."
