As Michigan's summer camp approaches, the coaching staff hosted a few top 2014 visitors including linebacker Michael Ferns (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville). This was not only his first time on campus, but his first time ever in the state of Michigan.
"I heard Ann Arbor is a great place, and getting up there, being in town, everything was great," he said. "I don't want to say too much, but (the visit) was a 10. I was shocked by the whole deal. It was really good."
He doesn't want to say too much, because he is fresh off the visit, which has left a lot of excitement in his mind. He felt very similar after visiting Penn State as well, and he plans on making it out to Notre Dame next. However, he isn't shy about saying what this did for Michigan in terms of his recruitment.
"It definitely, definitely helped Michigan. It really showed me what Michigan has to offer, not only for an athlete but for a student," he said. "The big part of the whole recruiting deal is seeing coaches and their personality. My impression was great just talking to the coaches."
Ferns mentions what Michigan has to offer as a student because he has a very specific goal in mind. He would like to study something within the medical field, and he got to see a different side of Michigan's program.
"I got to see the (Mott's) children's hospital, and they talked to me as a medical student approach," he said. "They have everything I would be looking for as an athlete."
As impressive as that sounds, Ferns said he was more impressed by the fact everything on campus is close in proximity. He felt as though the campus had everything one needed and that it was all within walking distance, which is a plus in his mind.
Ferns also got a chance to talk with the coaches and even some of the players. Meeting the players gave him a good look at what type of person Michigan has recruited in the past.
"They have a great group of athletes there right now," he said. "Obviously you could see that and you see Michigan towards the top of the recruiting charts the past couple years, so that's good."
While he admits that this visit boosted Michigan's position, and that he came away with positive thoughts about Michigan, Ferns said that he is just getting started with the process.
"I do want to go out to Notre Dame this next week and see what they have to offer," he said. "After that I think I'll settle down and get ready for my high school season. After that I'll start thinking about other visits and what I want to do."
