Cass Tech LB Drake talks early offers

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- Detroit Cass Tech 2014 linebacker Deon Drake Jr. picked up three new offers last week, two of which came from BCS programs.

Drake camped at Pittsburgh last Monday and added an offer not long after. The Pitt coaches confirmed what they saw from Drake’s highlight tape by watching him workout.

“They saw on my highlight tape and at the camp that I’m very athletic for me to be a linebacker, and they like my size,” Drake said.

It was the 5-foot-11, 205-pound sophomore’s first time visiting the program and the city, and he enjoyed what Pittsburgh has to offer outside of football, too.

“Everything was beautiful there. I seen a lot of historic places,” he said. “Overall it was very beautiful out there seeing Heinz Field (and) the Pirates’ field (PNC Park) also.”

Cincinnati did not host Drake for a camp, but Drake got in touch with the staff on the telephone. Drake said the Bearcats’ coaches essentially said the same thing as Pittsburgh, stressing his athleticism and ability to run sideline to sideline.

The Michigan State coaches made it a point to keep an eye on Drake during the Sound Mind, Sound Body camp Wednesday. Spartans commit Jon Reschke, a 2013 linebacker, let Drake know Michigan State is high on bringing him in next class.

Drake and the staff talked briefly and shook hands. The Spartans have not offered yet, but they are showing interest just like in-state rival Michigan. Drake could be ar at the Wolverines camp on Tuesday.

Iowa is a team that was on Drake early, as the Hawkeyes offered the young linebacker. Cass Tech already has a few players on the Hawkeyes’ roster and another one coming in 2013 when safety Delano Hill signs in February.

“That program is very nice. They’re trying to recruit me there,” Drake said. “It’s nice out here. I believe they have good leadership on their team. They’d make me a man.”

Wisconsin has also sent out an offer to Drake already.

“The coaches are very active with their players,” he said.

Local program Wayne State was the third offer for Drake this past week. Syracuse has also offered.
