The prospect who has gotten the most attention at Detroit Loyola High School thus far is defensive end Malik McDowell. Some of that attention will soon be averted to teammate Ka’John Armstrong.
In fact, the 6-foot-5, 275-pound offensive lineman has already started to hear from some big-time programs.
“I’m hearing from Michigan State the most, and a little from Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan,” he said. “I’m keeping all my options open, but I really want to hear more from Illinois, LSU and Michigan.”
Armstrong plays both offensive and defensive line for his team and says he has no preference of what position he plays in college. He is just starting to get interest from college programs, so he’s open to any ideas coaches throw at him.
Much like his teammate McDowell, Armstrong hasn’t yet started to dive into his recruitment. Both prospects are focused on the task at hand and trying to better their team this season. Armstrong isn’t sure if he will take a visit during the season, but he does have a few schools he would like to check out.
“I haven’t taken visits to Ohio State or Michigan, so I would really like to see them,” he said. “The only schools I’ve visited are Michigan State and Notre Dame, so I’d like to go see a few more.”
Having a teammate like McDowell to go against in practice is only beneficial for a prospect like Armstrong. The two go head to head often and challenge each other to get better every time they step on the field.
Since they are both hearing from similar schools it also makes it easier to go through the process and figure out which schools are right for them. Neither has talked about being a package deal, but it can only help to have a teammate to lean on.
Armstrong hasn’t quite figured out how his recruitment will play out but says he has a date in mind to make his final decision.
“I would like to get it done before next season starts,” he said. “Right now I could see myself at any team, so I’ll just go through everything then make my decision before the season starts up.”
