A Big Ten running back (Wisconsin's Montee Ball) won the Doak Walker award in 2012, and two Big Ten ball-carriers are in the mix to take it this season.
Nebraska junior Ameer Abdullah and Wisconsin sophomore Melvin Gordon are two of the 10 semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation's top running back. Abdullah leads the Big Ten and ranks sixth nationally in rushing average at 134.8 yards per game, while Gordon ranks second in the league and eighth nationally at 128.9 yards per game.
Abdullah has gained 100 yards or more in eight of nine games this season, including each Big Ten contest. He averages 146.9 yards per game in league play.
Gordon's numbers have dropped off a bit lately as teammate James White has emerged for the Badgers, but Gordon still leads the nation in yards per carry (8.1).
Three finalists for the award will be named on Nov. 25, and the winner will be announced on Dec. 12 during the Home Depot College Football Awards.
