Triple Option: Busy 48 hours in recruiting

Every weekday morning, a member of the SoonerNation gives his take on three things happening in the Sooner sports world.

1. I guess recruits want to enjoy the 4th of July. A simple recap of where several OU offers have committed in the last 48 hours. Linebacker Michael Hutchings (Concord, Calif./De La Salle) to USC. Cornerback Derek Babiash (Poway, Calif./Poway) to Arizona. Defensive tackle Hardreck Walker (Houston/Westfield) to Texas A&M. That was just Sunday. On Monday tight end DeSean Smith (Lake Charles, La./Barbe) committed to LSU. Linebacker Marcus Newby (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) committed to Nebraska. And there is one more pending with cornerback Adrian Baker (Hallandale, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna) who announced his commitment to Florida State and will talk with the Seminoles coaches Wednesday. It wasn’t all for nothing as OU did nab No. 12 in four-star offensive tackle Matt Beyer (San Antonio/Reagan).

2. Want to watch one Olympic event with an OU flavor? Your search stops with men’s gymnastics. The Sooners will be well represented with five current or former gymnasts on the squad. Jonathan Horton and Jake Dalton are two of the five members on the team. Steven Legendre, Chris Brooks and Alex Naddour are the three injury replacements if any of the five selected cannot compete. This is Horton’s second Olympic appearance, while it is the first for the other four gymnasts.

3. Offensive tackle is no longer a huge question mark following Beyer’s commitment. The Sooners remain in the hunt for a couple of quality tackles. However, it will be interesting to see what first-year linebackers coach Tim Kish does when he gets back to work. OU has offered 21 linebackers. Seventeen of them have committed to other schools. OU does have the commitment of four-star prospect Jordan Mastrogiovanni (Dallas/Jesuit) but also doesn’t look like to be a real contender for any of the three other uncommitted linebackers with OU offers.
