The Big 12 season is officially over. Mercifully, so is my season of picking Big 12 games.
For the final time, let’s review how I fared against the guest pickers. And tally up the totals on the season:
Trotter bowl picks: 2-4 (.333)
Guest picker (Air Force Justin) bowl picks: 2-4 (.333)
Trotter overall: 57-23 (.713)
Guest picker overall: 45-18 (.714)
That’s right. I lost to you guest pickers by a thousandth of a point. Had Oklahoma State not turned Michael Sam loose in the final minute, I probably would have prevailed. Instead, just like the Cowboys, I’m left the rest of this offseason pondering what could have been.
A review of the bowl picks:
My AT&T Cotton Bowl pick: Oklahoma State 31, Missouri 30
Justin’s pick: Missouri 41, Oklahoma 38
Actual score: Missouri 41, Oklahoma State 31
Hindsight: This game could have gone either way, and Justin and I were right in picking it to be close. The difference came down to a questionable pass interference call and Clint Chelf’s fumble in the fourth quarter.
My Allstate Sugar Bowl pick: Alabama 41, Oklahoma 17
Justin’s pick: Alabama 38, Oklahoma 17
Actual score: Oklahoma 45, Alabama 31
Hindsight: Just a stunning result that I didn’t see coming. There was always the possibility that Alabama wouldn’t care about this game, but that wasn’t the issue here. Alabama cared, and actually didn’t play all that poorly. The Sooners just took it to the Crimson Tide in every which way. Quarterback Trevor Knight and linebacker Eric Striker were just phenomenal.
My Tostitos Fiesta Bowl pick: Baylor 56, UCF 33
Justin’s pick: Baylor 52, UCF 24
Actual score: UCF 52, Baylor 42
Hindsight: Nobody expected UCF to completely roll through Baylor’s defense, which had been pretty good all season. Even though they put up 42 points, the Bears were not themselves offensively, either. According to Vegas, this was one of the biggest upsets in BCS history.
My National University Holiday Bowl pick: Arizona State 48, Texas Tech 31
Justin’s pick: Arizona State 31, Texas Tech 24
Actual score: Texas Tech 37, Arizona State 23
Hindsight: I have to be honest: I thought I was being generous predicting a margin of only 17 points, given how poorly Tech played to close out the season. But the Red Raiders finally, and unexpectedly, reverted back to their early season form, and with a healthy defense, shut down the Sun Devils. One of the most impressive performances by anyone in the bowl season.
My Valero Alamo Bowl pick: Oregon 44, Texas 28
Justin’s pick: Oregon 48, Texas 17
Actual score: Oregon 30, Texas 7
Hindsight: This game played out how I thought it would. The Longhorns played hard and played with emotion, but Texas simply did not have enough offense to seriously threaten the Ducks. Case McCoy threw for more interception return yards than actual passing yards. It’s hard to win overcoming that.
My Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl pick: Kansas State 35, Michigan 30
Justin’s pick: Michigan 27, Kansas State 24
Actual score: Kansas State 31, Michigan 14
Hindsight: I was all over this game. Michigan had no answer for K-State wide receiver Tyler Lockett, as the Wildcats zipped up and down the field. I made this pick before Wolverines QB Devin Gardner had been ruled out, or else I would have favored K-State by a larger margin. This was a very nice victory for the Big 12, and a solid win to give the Wildcats momentum going into what’s shaping up to be a promising 2014 season.
