Texas teammates high on Sooners

IRVING, Texas -- Tight end Christian Morgan (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood Christian) has a slew of offers, but he still doesn’t have one from Oklahoma.

He has said repeatedly in the past that even without the offer, he is still pretty high on Sooners. If you don’t believe him, ask his teammate, linebacker Mike Mitchell.

Mitchell said part of the reason he is interested in the Sooners is because of Morgan's praise.

“Christian talks so highly of OU, of the coaches, the family-like atmosphere. Everything. He says it’s a great place to be,” Mitchell said. “I feel that way, too, but it’s great to hear it from somebody else.”

And if Mitchell can have the same type of relationship with OU’s current defensive staff as he did with the previous one, the Sooners are back in business.

Mitchell, 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, said he received an OU offer from former defensive coordinator Brent Venables and that he hasn’t had a chance to talk with new linebackers coach Tim Kish or defensive coordinator Mike Stoops yet.

Both Morgan and Mitchell were invited to OU’s junior days but neither were able to attend.

After Mitchell’s performance Sunday at the Nike Football Training Camp event at the Dallas Cowboys practice facility, he now has everybody’s attention.

Mitchell was named the Most Valuable Player for linebackers and earned an invite to The Opening, the Nike all-star event featuring 150 of the top recruits in the nation in Oregon in July.

“Today was a lot of fun and a big learning experience,” Mitchell said. “There were a lot of great guys out here, and it was great to compete and see what I could do.”

He earned praised from practically every NFTC coach during the four-hour event. And for someone who had never participated in an elite camp-like atmosphere, Mitchell felt right at home.

“This really was what I expected. Great coaches, great competition. You couldn’t ask for more than this,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said one of the schools he will visit next is Texas A&M. Other colleges are still up in the air, including the Sooners.

“I do have a lot of interest [in OU], and I would love to be able to make a visit there next month or something like that,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell has around 15 offers. He said he doesn’t have any favorites, but he liked his visit to TCU, and he hopes to visit Ohio State, Ole Miss and Washington in the future.

“This process has been exciting, and I’ve been having fun with it. I’m still evaluating things, and we’ll see how things go from here.”

Texas commit Jake Oliver (Dallas/Jesuit) and fellow OU offer cornerback Maurice Smith (Sugar Land, Texas/Dulles) were also invited to The Opening on Sunday.
