Crimson Countdown: OT Tyrus Thompson

During the summer months, SoonerNation will take a closer look at each scholarship player on Oklahoma’s roster in our Crimson Countdown series. We'll analyze each player’s impact on the program since he arrived on campus, his potential impact this fall and his long-term impact. Starting with No. 1 Tony Jefferson, the daily series will go in numerical order until our final analysis of No. 98 Chuka Ndulue.

No. 71 Tyrus Thompson

Offensive tackle, 6-foot-5, 297 pounds

Impact so far: Thompson has not made a major impact during his first two years on campus but he has shown signs of being an significant contributor before his career is over. He redshirted in 2010, then played limited time in a backup role last season. He saw action in five games as a redshirt freshman in 2011.

This spring, Thompson impressed. He completed the spring in the midst of a battle at left tackle with Lane Johnson and even started the spring game with the No. 1 offense.

Impact in 2012: Thompson could earn a starting spot and should, at the very least, be a contributor as the Sooners' No. 3 tackle thanks to his ability to play both tackle positions.

Impact in 2013 and beyond: Thompson should become a key contributor along the Sooners offensive line during his career. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him become a two-year starter before he leaves Norman.
