CB Taylor gears up for Gridiron Kings

Oklahoma commit Stanvon Taylor (Tulsa, Okla./East Central) is ready to play a new role: recruiter. But don't expect Taylor, a four-star athlete who is ranked No. 231 in the ESPN 300, to be whoopin' and hollerin' about the Sooners when he participates in the Gridiron Kings event this weekend.

“You know me, that’s not really my personality to be like that,” Taylor said.

Taylor does realize the weekend can be a chance to get to know some OU targets even more, including a couple of Fresno (Calif.) Central East defensive backs in L.J. Moore and Hatari Byrd.

The weekend will also give Taylor another chance to connect with four-star receiver Laquon Treadwell (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee). The two met for the first time last month in Atlanta at the Rivals Challenge.

“I don’t believe in trying to push guys or pressure them,” Taylor said. “What I do and what I’m going to do is tell them why I love OU. Why I think we’re going to be building something special. Why we have the best fans in the nation. And if they want to come be a part of that, it would be great.”

Taylor will have a chance to show his cornerback skills against some of the best pass-catchers in the nation. He played receiver at the Rivals Challenge, which he said he didn’t mind. But it is clear his college future is in the secondary.

The event will also be another chance for Taylor to show he belongs on this stage. Taylor is ranked in the ESPN 300 despite having no junior film to review. He broke his ankle in the third quarter of the first game of the 2011 season and never played again.

With the injury a thing of the past, every opportunity like this is a chance for Taylor to show what he brings to the table.

“I learned a lot from the Rivals Challenge, and I’m excited about this,” Taylor said. “It’s a chance to compete with some of the best guys in the nation and see where I stack up with everybody. I’m definitely rested and ready to go.”

Taylor is one of 65 recruits selected for the Gridiron Kings event that will run from Friday through Sunday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., as part of the ESPNHS Games presented by GNC.
