ESPN Watch List tackle Demetrius Knox (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints) was so disheartened by watching Oklahoma dismantle Texas 63-21, he pulled out his cell phone after the game and called his Texas recruiter.
After watching the game from the Cotton Bowl, Knox dialed up Texas offensive line coach Stacy Searels to offer his support.
“It was pretty tough to watch,” he said. “I stayed through the whole game and I called coach Searels up a little while after that and told him UT is still my No. 1 [school].”
Knox had already been to Texas’ win over New Mexico earlier this season and had high expectations for the matchup. In his opinion, the Longhorns didn’t come out with enough attitude and failed to match Oklahoma’s intensity.
“Coach Searels was pretty disappointed after the loss,” Knox said. “He told me all the things they had to work on and he was disappointed in how the offensive line was blocking. I got a chance to talk to Mack Brown, too, and he said the same thing. But they’re happy that they’re still my No. 1.”
Knox made another phone call on Saturday evening to his Oklahoma recruiter, Bruce Kittle, and got some good news: The Sooners are offering him a scholarship.
The 6-foot-4, 300-pound lineman said he’s been talking with Kittle for nearly two weeks. Oklahoma is still trailing Texas, Ohio State and Alabama right now on Knox’s list, but he’s intrigued by what the program has to offer.
“I’m open to looking more into Oklahoma and scheduling some visits to go up there with some of my teammates,” he said. “But I just want to learn more about them first.”
When Michigan offered Knox earlier this year, the lineman politely said thanks but had no interest. He grew up in Ohio as a Buckeyes fan. He’s not going to play for their hated rival.
Now that Texas’ top rival is showing interest, Knox isn’t so quick to say no. But despite the big loss on Saturday, he’s not wavering in his love of the Longhorns.
“I was grateful when I talked to Coach Kittle about everything and I’m hoping to get up to some games in the future,” Knox said. “But I’m still UT all the way right now.”
