Vitals: Defensive end Jordan Evans, Norman, Okla./North | 6-foot-3, 205 pounds
Committed: Nov. 27, 2012
ESPN.com grade: 74. Three-star prospect.
ESPN.com rankings: No. 77 defensive end, No. 204 in the Midlands, No. 13 in Oklahoma
Picked OU over: Ohio, Air Force, Memphis, New Mexico and Colorado State.
State of the position: Evans plays linebacker at Norman North but he could end up at linebacker or defensive end at OU. At both positions, the Sooners have some quality young players. At linebacker, Frank Shannon and Aaron Franklin have shown signs of being playmakers. At defensive end, Michael Onuoha and Charles Tapper showed their raw potential during their first semesters on campus. There’s probably not an immediate need at either position.
Pros: “As a defender he is a bit of an OLB/DE 'tweener at this stage and plays both spots, but we feel if he can continue to add more good mass to his frame, D-End may be his better long term fit. Evans is a bit of a hybrid type defender who is likely best suited for end, but scheme and need will determine how he is utilized at the next level.” -- ESPN scouting report
Cons: “As a run defender needs to watch his pad level and continue to add size and strength to help him anchor, but is a bit more active in using his hands to keep separation and play off blocks. He will need to learn to be more active with his hands and develop a pass rush arsenal. Displays some rigidness when changing directions, but does have good straight-line speed and range.” -- ESPN scouting report
Similar to/potential role: Ronnell Lewis. Evans is a hybrid linebacker/defensive end type who could make his initial impact on special teams. He’s athletic and versatile, which could make him a valuable long-term asset in this era of spread offenses that can pass and run with success.
Expected impact: 2014. Evans could probably play in 2013 on special teams, but the Sooners have enough talented young players that they wouldn’t need to sacrifice a redshirt season for special teams duties. After a year in the weight room and learning the fundamentals of the position, Evans’ raw athletic talent could began to emerge in 2014 and 2015.
