Kruger has made Hammond an OU believer

Sophomore power forward Jacob Hammond (Duncan, Okla./OKC Storm) said he has been traveling from school to school for a while now. Originally from Texas, Hammond is at his second school in Oklahoma in as many years.

But Hammond has found a home with the OKC Storm, one of the best homeschool basketball teams in the nation.

“It’s getting better with each game,” Hammond said. “Things have been picking up, and I’ve been getting more comfortable.”

Hammond, 6-foot-8 and 210 pounds, never considered Oklahoma as a real potential school, but first-year coach Lon Kruger has changed Hammond’s thinking.

Hammond, a prospect for the class of 2014, has already made several unofficial visits to OU games and said the Sooners are one of his favorites at this point.

“I’ve never been a fan of OU, but I really like what Coach Kruger is doing there,” Hammond said. “I like his style and approach to the game. He is a proven winner.”

Hammond doesn’t have an OU offer yet, but the coaching staff has watched him a few times. And they’ll be watching Hammond more in the future as he is on the same team as 2015 shooting guard Allonzo Trier.

Trier, 6-foot and 165 pounds, said he already is hearing from several of the top teams in the nation, and he was ranked as the top seventh-grader in the nation two years ago. And life for Trier is easier now that Hammond is on board.

“He brings a lot to the team, for sure,” Trier said. “He is able to defend really well and blocks a lot of shots. He’ll get rebounds that will get us going on the break. Definitely happy he is here.”

Hammond and Trier have been a potent one-two punch for the OKC Storm, which won its second consecutive tournament this weekend at Oklahoma City Heritage Hall. Their smallest margin of victory in their three wins was 32 points.

Hammond averaged 13.3 points, eight rebounds and three blocks per game, while Trier averaged 17.3 points per game, including a 37-point outburst in the first round where he connected on 9 of 13 of his 3-point attempts.
