Roundtable: OU's recruiter of the year

Which Oklahoma coach had the best year on the recruiting trail?

WR coach Jay Norvell

The Sooners have never had a WR class as good as this, and Norvell is the biggest reason for it. In addition to keeping Trey Metoyer on board, Norvell added Sterling Shepard (the No. 9 WR), Durron Neal (No. 10) and Derrick Woods (No. 19). If Norvell somehow gets Dorial Green-Beckham (No. 1 WR) to ink with the Sooners, OU’s will be the best receiving class of any school in years.

WR coach Jay Norvell

No matter what happens with Green-Beckham (Springfield, Mo./Hillcrest), Norvell has done a terrific job on the recruiting trail. He secured three prep All-Americans in Neal (St. Louis/DeSmet), Shepard (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall) and Woods (Inglewood, Calif./Inglewood). Norvell’s relationship with Neal was critical to the Sooners landing the highly recruited prospect and his relationship with DGB has kept OU in the conversation for the elite receiver despite unrest within the program.

OT/TE coach Bruce Kittle

Giving this to Kittle with a little qualifier to it. Wide receivers coach Jay Norvell had a monstrous class, but no one knew what Kittle was going to do in his first year as an assistant coach and active recruiter. He was able to secure a top tight end in Taylor McNamara (San Diego/Westview) and might have found a gem in junior college tight end Brannon “Moose” Green (Altamont, Kan./Fort Scott CC). Plus, he added three-star tight end Sam Grant (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Edward) when it looked like he was all but destined to head to Michigan.

OT/TE coach Bruce Kittle

I can't argue with Norvell over Kittle, but because the Sooners have no returning tight ends in 2012, Kittle had to hit a homerun on the recruiting trail, and he did just that. OU will sign four tight ends on Wednesday, three of whom could make an impact next season. And while Kittle missed on 6-foot-8 tackle Banner, he landed a tackle that could start in 2012 in junior college star Will Latu (St. Petersburg, Fla./College of the Canyons).
