CB Dakota Austin hoping for Sooners offer

As the summer months arrived, Dakota Austin (Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster) knew he needed to take his future into his own hands. The 2013 cornerback prospect wasn’t getting the attention or offers he felt like he deserved.

So Austin has spent the past few weeks going from college campus to college campus, participating in football camps.

“I really want to get to these schools and show my talent,” Austin said. “I want to bring it to them and show them first-hand.”

And he has succeeded in making an impression, including his one-day session at Oklahoma.

“I’m real tired right now but I feel better about where I stand as a player,” Austin said. “Going out and getting to compete against all these different players in different places gave me the confidence I needed to prepare my game for the next level.”

Austin was one of the most impressive defensive backs at the Sooners camp, catching the eye of defensive coordinator and secondary coach Mike Stoops, who consistently praised his effort and coached him hard during drills.

“I could tell they were watching close,” Austin said. “I tried not to focus on making mistakes and just play my game. I just go out and play. I don’t think of it as pressure -- I think of it as opportunity when they are watching.”

Stoops made a great impression on Austin, who has attended camps at OU, Texas A&M, Kansas State and Oklahoma State.

“I like his enthusiasm; he’s real passionate about the game,” Austin said. “The off-technique [he taught] really helped a lot, I’ve been using it in these camps the past couple of days.”

His time in Norman stood out as he loved the one-on-one competition with some quality receivers, including 2014 Sooners offer K.D. Cannon (Mount Pleasant, Texas/Mount Pleasant).

“I liked it,” he said. “It was competition I don’t get to go against every day.”

Undersized at 5-foot-10, 149 pounds, Austin received good feedback after his camp performance but has not received an OU offer.

“I felt pretty good,” Austin said of his performance. “I was, of course, hoping for the offer. In due time I think it will come.”
