A power forward with a familiar last name picked up an offer from Ohio State -- his third offer from a Big Ten school.
Nigel Hayes (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer), whose brother Kenny is a redshirt freshman on Ohio State’s football team, nabbed an offer from his home state school after a monster junior season.
The offer was confirmed by his mother Talaya Davis and Panthers basketball coach Bruce Smith on Wednesday.
Hayes, who also played wide receiver on Whitmer’s state semifinal football team last season, was a big reason for the Panthers’ deep postseason run on the hardwood.
Whitmer reached the Division I state finals in March, losing to Pickerington Central 45-40 in the championship game. Hayes finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in the finals.
A second-team All-Ohio selection, the 6-foot-7 Hayes averaged 13.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game last season.
He has offers from Akron, Butler, Central Michigan, Minnesota, Toledo and Wisconsin and interest from schools like Memphis, Purdue and Xavier.
