Training day: First session done for Bucks

The first day of training camp is only half over for Ohio State.

But the veterans have already been in and out of practice after arriving early for a 6 a.m. workout.

After it was over, a handful of returners met with the media for the first time since the official start of the season for the Buckeyes. A full story will be up later this afternoon on the leadership Braxton Miller is trying to establish as he heads into his sophomore campaign as the face of the offense, and until then, enjoy these appetizers from the morning.

Great expectations

Bradley Roby isn't interested in setting the bar low.

The sophomore defensive back also wasn't shy about revealing his goals for the Buckeyes.

"We can go undefeated -- easy," Roby said. "That's the whole team's expectation, that is our goal. We don't see anybody on the [schedule] that we can't match up with talent-wise.

"We have the best coaches in the country, so why couldn't we? That's our goal."

On the scales

Carlos Hyde didn't hit the number exactly.

But since he's still running the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds, the coaching staff appears to be all right with the fact Hyde only dropped five of the eight pounds they planned for as he reported at 235 on Friday morning.

"We had extra conditioning and stuff," Hyde said. "Last year I played at 240 and I had to get down to 232. I’m at 235 right now, but they’re kind of OK with that.

"Extra conditioning and stuff, lose five pounds -- but I still run a fast 40, so it doesn’t really matter."

Early risers

By his own admission, Garrett Goebel isn't a morning person.

But he got up 40 minutes earlier than he normally would for a 6 a.m. start on Friday, climbing out of bed at 4:30 to get ready for the first day of training camp -- a workout he called fast-paced with plenty of energy.

"I’m not really a morning person, but it wasn’t too bad," the senior defensive lineman said. "I mean, I’m sure there are people that are morning people, but most of us are accustomed to it because we have a lot of early-morning workouts here.

"You could tell that guys were excited to be back out on the field."
