Ohio State 2013 class: 5 things to learn

It's roughly seven weeks until national signing day.

Ohio State’s recruiting class of 2013 has strangleholds defensively on the line and in the secondary. But there are still things the Buckeyes must learn on the fly.

With that in mind, here are five things the squad will probably need to be shored up or at least plugged up a bit in terms of the 2013 season.

1. Linebackers needed… like now: The position is still in need of major fixing as this class has no one currently in the mix. Mike Mitchell (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood Christian) and Trey Johnson (Lawrenceville, Ga./Central Gwinnett) are set to announce in early January. That would go a long way in helping.

2. Wideout worries: Verlon Reed’s departure might hurt a bit, but right now the Buckeyes have just one pure wide receiver in their recruiting class. That could likely change with either James Quick (Louisville, Ky./Trinity), Shelton Gibson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) or Ryan Timmons (Frankfort, Ky./Franklin County) possibly coming in. Gareon Conley (Massillon, Ohio/Washington) can be used in a pinch at wideout as well.

3. Offensive line obstacle: With only Evan Lisle (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and Tim Gardner (Indianapolis/Lawrence Central) in the class, there’s a need. Ohio State has swung and missed with other committed players and might have to move Donovan Munger (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) or Billy Price (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) to the other side of the ball.

4, Running into problems: It might not happen, but if Carlos Hyde or Jordan Hall leave, Ezekiel Elliott (St. Louis/John Burroughs) might see the field sooner rather than later. There are viable backs in the fold now for the Buckeyes. If two leave, “Zeke the freak” might be chanted much earlier than anticipated.

5. Instant access: Urban Meyer isn’t one for letting freshmen just sit around and watch. With 82 athletes on scholarship, first-year players on the field might be the norm. A handful of players from this class will be playing next season.
