The Opening: Penn State storylines

There might be only two PSU commits at The Opening, which kicks off 7 p.m. ET on July 1 (ESPNU), but that doesn't mean there are only two reasons for PSU fans to follow the events.

Here are four storylines to keep an eye on:

1. De'Andre Thompkins and Troy Vincent Jr. representing Penn State on the same team. The two commits will flash their skills on Team Vapor Carbon. Both are listed as athletes by ESPN, but both will play at the positions PSU recruited them for -- Thompkins at wideout and Vincent Jr. at cornerback. This will be the first time most PSU fans will get a glimpse of the four-star commits, and it'll be especially interesting to see what Thompkins can do against elite competition. He's ranked as the 54th-best high school player in the country, and he's the highest-ranked B1G commit at The Opening.

2. Plenty of future opponents to check out. Ohio State leads the pack with nine commits heading to The Opening, while Michigan and Michigan State boast two apiece, Purdue has a quarterback, Minnesota has a tailback, and Nebraska has an offensive guard. Quarterbacks won't be put on teams until June 30, so there's a chance an OSU or Purdue QB could be throwing to Thompkins.

3. Getting a closer look at remaining PSU targets. Although two current commits will be there, there also will be two other PSU targets at The Opening. DT Thomas Holley and DB Montae Nicholson actually will join forces on the Landsharks. So when they play Vapor Carbon, it will make for an especially interesting matchup for PSU fans. Nicholson is listed as the team's athlete, so he might not be relegated to just DB either.

4. Potential matchup: WR Thompkins vs. CB Damon Webb. This is definitely the matchup B1G fans are hoping for -- it pits the two top-ranked Big Ten commits against one another. Webb is a corner and OSU commit on Team Alpha Pro and is ranked No. 57 in the country, while Thompkins is a WR on Team Vapor Carbon is ranked No. 54 in the country. It doesn't get much closer than this, and this is a matchup fans could see again in a few years.
