QB Andrew Ford likes new Rutgers staff

Watch List quarterback Andrew Ford (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) has visited Rutgers before. This weekend was the first time Ford made it to Piscataway, N.J., with the new coaching staff, though.

Rob Spence is in his first year as the Scarlet Knights’ quarterback coach and Ford like what he saw from Spence.

“I was very impressed with him, his resume and the quarterbacks he sent to the NFL,” Ford said. “He’s real down to earth.”

Ford spoke at length with Spence, who said he has watched extensive film of Ford, who is one of the top passers in Pennsylvania as a junior.

“He said I carry all the things they’re looking for in a quarterback,” Ford said. “He said they have big plans for the Class of 2014 and said he’s been looking at five to 10 quarterbacks and right now I’m really standing out to him. I’ll come to the camp in the spring because he wants me to throw in person, but from what he’s seen he said the sky’s the limit.”

Ford met first-year head coach Kyle Flood while on a visit last fall, but it was just a quick greeting as Flood was the offensive line coach at the time. Now leading the program, Ford got the notion that Flood could be on track for big things at Rutgers.

“We talked for a little after the game and you could tell he’s taken the program in the right direction,” Ford said.

Before the game, Ford had a chance to speak with the players redshirting during a pregame meal. From talking with the players, Ford got a good sense for the education and social life and believed the players were being honest instead of giving the company line.

“It was good to hear about the academics and the lifestyle,” he said. “It was good to hear how they feel. It wasn’t all what you might get at some schools from trying to sell the program.”

Ford will visit Penn State on Oct. 27 and hopes to visit Notre Dame and Michigan in November.
