A&M recruits to watch at Texas state finals

While most college football teams are practicing for bowl games and getting ready for a brief break for Christmas, high school football teams in Texas are preparing for the University Interscholastic League state championships.

The finals begin today at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas and over the next three days, there will be several players to watch who are either committed to Texas A&M or that the Aggies have interest in. Here's a glance at the games and players to watch for Aggies fans this weekend at JerryWorld:

Friday, Dec. 21

Class 3A Division II: Gilmer (Texas) High School vs. Navasota (Texas) High School, 4 p.m.

Players to watch: 2014 OLB Josh Walker, Gilmer (Texas A&M commit)

Notable: Walker had a huge game in Gilmer's state semifinal win over Graham (Texas) High School. He collected three sacks on defense and ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns on offense on five totes. He committed to the Aggies in October and had offers from Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech at the time of his commitment. He'll be an outside linebacker when he arrives at A&M and lines up primarily as an edge rusher for Gilmer.

Class 4A Division II: Lancaster (Texas) High School vs. Cedar Park (Texas) High School, 8 p.m.

Players to watch: 2014 ATH Nick Harvey, Lancaster (Texas A&M commit); 2013 DE Daeshon Hall, Lancaster (Washington commit)

Notable: Harvey is a two-way player for Lancaster and has 788 combined rushing and receiving yards and 17 touchdowns on offense while also playing in the secondary on defense. He's likely a defensive back at the next level but said the Aggies' coaching staff is open to using him on both sides. Hall has a Texas A&M offer and though he's committed to Washington, he's worth keeping an eye on in the coming weeks. Harvey said that upon his commitment, Hall asked him if the Aggies were still taking 2013 recruits. With Texas A&M junior college defensive end target Za'Darius Smith signing with Kentucky on Wednesday, it's possible they could look into Hall as a target.

Saturday, Dec. 22

Class 5A Division II: Cedar Hill (Texas) High School vs. Katy (Texas) High School, 4 p.m.

Players to watch: 2013 WR Quincy Adeboyejo, Cedar Hill (Texas A&M commit); 2013 ATH LaQuvionte Gonzalez, Cedar Hill (Texas A&M commit); 2015 RB Rodney Anderson, Katy.

Notable: The pair often called "Quincy and Quiv," has been a dynamic duo for the Longhorns all year long. They're fast, talented and can make big plays with the football. Adeboyejo has 87 receptions for 1,230 yards and 17 touchdowns this year while Gonzalez leads the team in rushing with 1,415 yards and 20 scores to go with 32 catches for 324 yards and four touchdowns in addition to playing in the return game (he has 26 touchdowns total). Anderson is a young back who also spends some time at receiver as Katy as a bonafide No. 1 back in Nebraska commit Adam Taylor. But Anderson appears to be the next star running back in a long line of them for Katy. The high school sophomore attended a couple of Texas A&M games this season and has rushed for 900 yards and 16 touchdowns this year.

Class 5A Division I: Allen (Texas) High School vs. Houston Lamar, 8 p.m.

Players to watch: 2015 QB Kyler Murray, Allen; 2014 S John Bonney, Lamar

Notable: Murray is young but he carries a familiar last name to Texas A&M fans. Kyler's father, Kevin Murray, starred as a quarterback for the Aggies in the 1980s. Texas A&M has showed early interest in the 5-foot-11 signal caller, who has thrown for 1,955 yards and 16 touchdowns with just five interceptions on 233 attempts. He's a dual-threat, having rushed for 1,227 yards and 23 scores. Bonney has A&M interest but no offer as of yet. He's a rising prospect in the Houston area, holding six offers: Baylor, Houston, LSU, Northwestern, Oklahoma State and SMU.
