Juco DB Jones gets election day offer

When junior college prospect Riyahd Jones (Garden City, Kan./Garden City Community College) sat down to watch the election results come in, the 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back did not expect his phone to ring. More than that, Jones was not prepared for a college coach at an SEC program to be on the other line. But that is exactly what happened Tuesday night. What he heard next caught him completely off guard.

“I got an offer from Texas A&M and it came out of nowhere,” Jones said. “I had never talked to Texas A&M before today. We talked for 30 minutes before he offered me.”

Instead of spending time selling them on the Aggies’ program, Jones was told Texas A&M is interested in him because of his ability to cover and because he is fearless. The direct approach was met with approval from the new juco target.

“He made a good impression because he was honest and to the point,” Jones said. “I liked that about him. One thing that stood out was that he wants me to come in and play boundary corner. That is the position that I want to play because that is the corner that gets the most action in one-on-one coverage.”

With new schools coming in contact almost daily, Jones does not have a top group of schools. Instead, he is keeping an open mind and being patient as offers continue to trickle in. Ole Miss and Kansas State have secured official visits from Jones, and Texas A&M could be next.

“Texas A&M is on the rise in the SEC and they definitely have a great young quarterback,” Jones said. “I am going to send them my transcripts in the morning and they will definitely get one of my three remaining official visits.”
