Q&A: 2014 OLB Otaro Alaka

Other 2014 linebackers might get more hype in the state of Texas, but Otaro Alaka doesn’t need it. He’s already got the offers to back up his talents.

The 6-foot-3, 196-pound outside linebacker from Houston Cypress Falls has already picked up eight verbal offers and is excited to see how his recruitment plays out this spring.

Alaka has been in contact with Manny Diaz and Texas, but several other schools are in the lead at this point. Here’s the latest on his recruiting process.

HornsNation: Junior days are coming up soon. What are you plans for those?

Alaka: I’m going to go to Oklahoma on Jan. 12 for their junior day. I’m excited about that. They invited me and have sent me some stuff in the mail.

HN: What do you think of the opportunity to go check out Norman?

Alaka: I think it’s a good opportunity and that’s one of my top choices right now.

HN: Besides Oklahoma, what other schools are at the top of your list?

Alaka: It’s probably a top three. Right now it’s probably Northwestern, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

HN: What set those three programs apart from the rest?

Alaka: They’re just good football teams and have the good academics that I’m looking for. They’ve got some need for linebackers, as well.

HN: What other schools are you looking into visiting this spring?

Alaka: Texas A&M also invited to me one of their junior days earlier, so I might go there.

HN: Are you still hearing much from Texas since your season ended?

Alaka: They came to the school a month ago, but since then I haven’t really heard from them. I’d be interested if they offered. They’re a good team.

HN: You guys lost your top playmaker, Texas commit Jacorey Warrick, to a torn meniscus late in the season. Did you have to step up after that?

Alaka: We all knew that we had to step up as a defense since the offense wasn’t going to be what it used to be. It wasn’t that much of a problem. I’m excited to watch him play at Texas. I think he can get on the field pretty early and be a good slot receiver.

HN: What’s your goal this offseason? What do you need to do to put yourself in position for a big senior season?

Alaka: Just get better at everything and get stronger as well. I’d like to get my weight up another 15 pounds and also get my speed up as well.

HN: What are the biggest things you’re looking for as you take these junior day unofficial visits?

Alaka: Just how early I can get on the field, their academics and what the town is like.
