Welcome to your daily Board Meeting. Each evening we’ll update you on the day’s hottest topics on the HornsNation forum.
1. Texas falls behind for Maurice Smith: Max Olson went out to Sugar Land Dulles to catch up with Maurice Smith. There was a time when Smith could have been a lock commit for the Longhorns, but they waited to make their offer.
Now it appears as if Texas coaches might regret that decision. Sure, it’s a long time until February 2013 when Smith’s decision becomes official. He hasn’t even committed yet. However, at this point, he has definitely cooled on Texas.
Can Duane Akina and Co. make some progress and get Smith in the fold, yes, but if they don’t, they will certainly second guess the decision to take so long on evaluating and offering Smith and fellow in-state DB Antwuan Davis.
2. Big 12 to add ACC schools: Nicholas73230 posted this thread talking about ACC schools Clemson, Florida State and Georgia Tech being possible additions to the Big 12.
The conference still needs to add two more schools to live up to its name, and more importantly earn the ability to hold a conference championship game. That fact, and TV markets are the biggest points here.
The conference championship game is a tremendous money-maker for a the conference and expanding TV footprints have driven all the conference expansions to date.
Carter Strickland and Sean Adams make good points that of the three shilohseals mentions, only GT would add to the Big 12’s TV reach. Clemson and FSU are good football additions to the conference, but they are not huge TV markets. Georgia Tech is less of a known power, but could bring the Atlanta market.
As mentioned in the thread, BYU amongst other might make more sense if and when expansions happen.
3. Poll: Second ESPN 150: shilohseals posted this poll looking at which players might climb into the second edition of the 2013 ESPN 150 rankings.
The choices: Torrodney Prevot, Ra’Shaad Samples, Jake Oliver, Kyle Hicks and Durham Smythe.
The most likely seems to be either Prevot or Oliver. Both were not far off when the first batch of rankings were released last week and both have already made names for themselves on the camp circuit. Prevot was the MVP of the Dallas Nike Football Training Camp and Oliver earned an invitation to The Opening in July. As evaluation period continues and these two make more appearances against other nationally known prospects, scouts will be able to further gauge how could they will be and possibly move them up in the rankings.
