Q&A: 2014 Texas athlete Javon Arnett

There were plenty of familiar recruits in Austin for Texas’ game against Baylor on Saturday. But there was a new one that had never been to Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium before.

Junior athlete Javon Arnett (Waco, Texas/La Vega) drove down to see what the Longhorns had to offer. He’s being recruited as a running back by Texas’ co-offensive coordinator Major Applewhite, who traveled to watch Arnett play a few weeks ago.

Arnett (5-foot-9, 165 pounds), who predominantly lines up at safety out of need for La Vega, would love to receive an offer from the Longhorns. He currently doesn’t have any offers.

HornsNation: What is your relationship like with Coach Applewhite?

Javon Arnett: We try to keep a close relationship with each other. Whenever we have time we try to talk with each other and see how the season is going and everything.

HN: What has Coach Applewhite told you about the possibility of an offer?

Arnett: He just tells me to keep working hard at what I do and that he is going to keep in contact with me. He is going to keep updating me on everything.

HN: Is Texas a program that interests you?

Arnett: I like their program a lot. I like when they come out for games they are real focus. They are ready. There isn’t any joking around. They mean business.

HN: What was your time like in Austin for the Texas-Baylor game?

Arnett: It was more than everything that I expected. I plan on going down there in two more weeks again. I spoke with Coach Applewhite and Coach Wyatt while I was there. I liked how Texas’ program is. It’s wonderful down there.

HN: What other school would you like to hear from?

Arnett: Oklahoma. When I was little I really liked them.

HN: Did Texas’ blowout loss to Oklahoma hurt the Longhorns or help the Sooners in your eyes?

Arnett: I couldn’t really tell with that game because I would like to attend either school. I couldn’t have a debate on that game.

HN: Why should a team like Texas continue to recruit you or a school like Oklahoma begin to recruit you?

Arnett: I treat every play like it’s my last because you never know when it can be taken away from you. So you have to treat every play like it’s your last.

HN: You are primarily a safety this year but you would prefer to play running back, correct?

Arnett: I just have to help my team out. I have to do what I have to do. I practice on both sides of the ball. I get the same amount of reps as the other backs. But I don’t get many carries in games.
