Burnt Orange Breakdown: 35 Kendall Thompson

HornsNation, will analyze each of the scholarship players currently on the Texas roster. (The bulk of the 2012 class is not currently on the roster.) We will look at the player’s past contributions, what he might do for Texas this year and the future impact he could have on the program. Starting with No. 1 Mike Davis we will go through the roster numerically before ending with No. 99 Desmond Jackson.

No. 35

Kendall Thompson

Linebacker, 6-3, 237, sophomore

Impact in 2011

Thompson was primarily a special-teams player in his freshman season. He did see limited action on defense in Texas’ blowout wins against Kansas and Texas Tech.

Impact in 2012

Once again Thompson goes into the season as a backup but he has much more of a chance to play in 2012. Texas only goes three deep at linebacker right now so there are several players, such as Thompson, shuffling for positioning and even pushing the three guys in front of them.

Impact in 2013 and beyond

Unless Thompson makes a move in 2012 for more playing time he might be relegated to a backup role until his senior year in 2014. Texas has youth at the linebacker spot and it is not likely that any of the current three starters -- Jordan Hicks, Demarco Cobbs or Steve Edmond -- will be going pro early. That means the starting lineup is set at least through 2013.
