Notes from the win over Iowa State

As Texas gets ready for its biggest game of the year, and the game by which its success this season largely will be measured, one former Longhorn had some advice for his brother, who is currently on the Texas roster.

"Don’t let the game outshine you," Quentin Jammer offered as advice to Quandre Diggs. "It’s a big rivalry game. Settle down and play your game. And, if you get a pick, take it to the house."

Diggs has one interception but no return yards. He did force a fumble against Iowa State that resulted in a Texas score.

Inside the numbers

The quarterback split was more even than it has been in any game this year. In fact, it was dead even. Case McCoy was in on 30 plays. David Ash was in on 30 plays.

"It's working," sais co-offensive coordinator Byran Harsin in explaining the even rotation.

Aside from getting an equal number of snaps, both quarterbacks attempted 12 passes and hit seven of them. Ash's longest pass went for 49 yards. McCoy had one for 48. Both also were credited with three rushes. McCoy gained two yards. Ash lost 17.

Stat of the game

Malcolm Brown rushed for 63 yards. That is his lowest output of the season. And after a 22-yard run to start the game, Brown was rendered ineffective throughout the rest of the game. In fact, Iowa State held Texas to its lowest rushing output of the season. The Longhorns came in to the game averaging 226 rushing yards but finished with 145 rushing yards against the Cyclones.

Brown had averaged 88 yards per game and a 5.1 yards per carry average. Without Brown being able to balance the offense with the running game, Iowa State was able to attack the quarterback. That clearly rattled McCoy early in the game as he was was only 2-of-5 passing in the first half.

Play of the game

Midway through the third quarter, with Texas spinning its wheels offensively, the Longhorns were flagged for an illegal substitution. On the surface it was a meaningless play in a game that had reached blowout proportions. But what made the play remarkable was it was the first time since Texas started the entire David Ash, Case McCoy rotation that it has been whistled for an illegal substitution.

Unsung hero

Plenty of true freshmen on the Texas team are getting their due. Against Iowa State it was a new duo that stepped forward. Mykkele Thompson raced around the right side of the Cyclones' punt protection team and blocked a punt in the second quarter. Josh Turner picked the ball up and returned it for a 34-yard touchdown. That score put Texas up 27-0 and the game out of reach.

Odds and ends

• Jaxon Shipley's 141 yards receiving were the most of his career and the most for any Texas freshman since 2001. Mike Davis had two 100-yard receiving games as a freshman last season. B.J. Johnson leads all Texas freshmen in receiving yards with 187. He had that against Texas A&M in 2000

• Texas is 6-0 in the last two seasons when it wins the turnover battle

• Texas' Ash and McCoy have gone 10 quarters without throwing an interception

• The last three times Texas has entered the Red River Rivalry unbeaten it has won.
