14 for '14: Texas defensive targets (Part 1)

AUSTIN, Texas -- In less than four months national signing day for the Class of 2013 will come and go, and the class of 2014 will take center stage in the eyes of football programs and fan bases everywhere.

This year is unique in that many of the Longhorns’ junior targets are already known. For the first time in Mack Brown’s tenure on the 40 Acres, Texas has begun offering juniors before Junior Day in February.

Here is a look at seven junior offensive prospects that either already have Texas offers or could be in line for one down the road. We'll look at another seven on Tuesday, then switch to offense on Wednesday and Thursday:

S Jamal Adams (Lewisville, Texas/Hebron)

6-foot-0, 195 | ESPN Watch List member

The Latest: The Longhorns sit in a good position with Adams right now. He’s been to several Texas games, has camped in Austin and has a strong bond with several Texas commitments and targets. He did not seem to dock points from the Longhorns after their embarrassing loss to Oklahoma.

Offers: Baylor, Iowa, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, West Virginia

Quotable: "He said that he would love to have me suited up right there and now. That was the best highlight of the night." -- Adams on what Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz told him prior to UT’s game against West Virginia.

CB Tony Brown (Beaumont, Texas/Ozen)

6-foot-0, 179 pounds | ESPN Watch List member

The Latest: Brown is one of the top cornerbacks in the country and one of the top priorities for the Longhorns in 2014. His offers list is extensive, but Texas is one of the teams that is standing out to him right now. He really likes the way the Longhorns use their cornerbacks in man coverage. LSU is going to be one of Texas’ biggest competitiors.

Offers: Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Illinois, LSU, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Rutgers, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA, USC, West Virginia

Quotable: “I feel very comfortable with the coaching staff. Coach [Major] Applewhite is recruiting me. Coach [Duane] Akina, they are all real cool.” -- Brown

S Edwin Freeman (Arlington, Texas/Bowie)

6-foot-1, 200 pounds | ESPN Watch List member

The Latest: Freeman is a quiet individual who lets his play do most of his talking. So it’s hard to get a read on what exactly he is feeling. However, he has told HornsNation that his top three, in order, are Texas A&M, Texas and OU.

Offers: Houston, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, West Virginia

Quotable: “It was exciting. It was kind of a shock that they offered so early. I have been waiting for the offer. They came down, talked to me, watched my film and told me they were going to keep watching me. Some schools came around and I was waiting on them. When I found out it had happened it was a dream come true.” -- Freeman on being offered by Texas.

DE Myles Garrett (Arlington, Texas/Martin)

6-foot-5, 235 pounds | ESPN Watch List member

The Latest: Garrett is really focused on his season right now and hasn’t paid too much attention to recruiting. But Texas has let him know he is a major priority. His sister runs track at Texas A&M.

Offers: Arkansas, Minnesota, Texas

Quotable: “Mack Brown sat me down in his office and offered me. It was crazy. I didn’t know what to think. He didn’t tell me what he was doing. I thought he was going to tell me they were going to look at me, but he told me that I had an offer. I didn’t know what to say.” -- Garrett on being offerd by Texas.

OLB Cameron Hampton (Dallas, Texas/Carter)

6-foot-2, 215 pounds | ESPN Watch List member

The Latest: Texas has some work to do with Hampton. He went into the Red River Rivalry wanting the Sooners to win because of the relationship he has built with Tim Kish, their linebackers coach. The Longhorns sit second behind OU at this point.

Offers: Clemson, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, West Virginia

Quotable: “I hope Oklahoma wins. I like Coach Kish. I like Coach [Manny] Diaz too, but Coach Kish is a really cool coach.” -- Hampton on his thoughts going into the Red River Rivalry.

DB Nick Harvey (Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster)

5-foot-11, 180 pounds | ESPN Watch List member

The Latest: Harvey doesn’t say much about his recruitment, but he hasn’t hesitated in saying that Texas is going to be in it for the long haul. He’s one of the top defensive backs in the state regardless of class.

Offers: Arkansas, Baylor, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Virginia

Quotable: “No way. They are still Texas. I believe they can bounce back from that one.” -- Harvey on Texas’ loss to OU and if it affected how he views the Longhorns

ILB Raekwon McMillan (Hinesville, Ga./Liberty County)

6-foot-3, 235 pounds | ESPN Watch List member

The Latest: McMillan is one of the most coveted players in all of the country, and it seems like it’s going to be tough to get him out of SEC country. However he did live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for a few years and is familiar with the program. If Texas shows him interest, he has said he’ll show it back.

Offers: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas

Quotable: “I am just someone that gets noticed by teams from across the nation, and I’m not favoring anyone right now. I am keeping my options open. But if Texas takes a lot of interest in me, I will take a lot of interest in them.” -- McMillan
