WeAreSC recruiting reporter Blair Angulo answers reader questions in his mailbag every week. Have a USC recruiting question of your own? Submit it via Twitter @WeAreSCstaff or @bangulo.
Brandon Matthews, via @bcmatthews: Does SC have any shot at Connor Humphreys?
WeAreSC: A shot, yes, but it’s very slim.
Humphreys told me earlier this week he thoroughly enjoyed his April visit to USC and didn’t see any facilities this summer that are on par with the Trojans’ John McKay Center, but he didn’t initially include them in his top five. That might not be a great indication, even if the Trojans sneaked into the final list heading into Saturday night’s announcement. Assistant coach Mike Summers dropped by Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic during the spring evaluation period, but there hasn’t been much contact since.
James Jarquin, via @jarquin_james: When is Malik Dorton going to commit? We are recruiting him as a LB? Heard he’s a Trojan lean but who’s our competition for him? How many receivers are we looking to take this class? With physical practices we need more depth. Any standout WR recruits?
WeAreSC: Dorton intends to announce his commitment on Friday, Aug. 23. He told me earlier this week he’s being recruited as the hybrid backer in the new 5-2 defensive front. Even though he prefers defensive end, he has no issue with playing outside linebacker in college. UCLA was Dorton’s early leader, but Arizona State and Washington have surfaced as other schools to worry about moving forward.
I can see USC wanting to sign at least three receivers in this cycle after getting only Steven Mitchell in February. The big targets out there are Adoree’ Jackson (Gardena, Calif./Serra), Michiah Quick (Fresno, Calif./Central) and John “JuJu” Smith (Long Beach, Calif./Poly), though they could all play in the secondary as well. In the tier below them, receivers like Erik Brown (Fontana, Calif./Summit) and Jordan Lasley (Gardena, Calif./Serra) could eventually pick up USC offers.
