The USC Trojans received a big commitment Wednesday night from ESPNU 150 Watch List quarterback Max Browne (Sammamish, Calif./Skyline), and Lane Kiffin and staff weren't about to let that momentum stall. Thursday afternoon, the Trojans hosted ESPNU 150 Watch List tailback Justin Davis (Stockton, Calif./Lincoln).
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Davis visited USC with his mother, father and brother. The same group visited USC in early February for the Trojans junior day, but Davis said this time around he had many more opportunities to tour the campus and meet with coaches and players.
"They did everything right on this trip," Davis said of USC. "Everything was just about perfect. They made me feel at home."
Davis said his parents loved the trip as well, as they quickly focused on how the USC coaching staff stresses the family atmosphere inside the program and throughout the school. Davis specifically mentioned a special teams meeting he was able to attend.
"They have a lot of fun and there is good energy in those meetings," Davis said. "The chemistry is good and I like that they are all so close."
After not taking a tailback in last year's class, Kiffin and staff have focused their attention on landing at least one back in the class of 2013, and Davis has climbed to the top of the list.
"They want me to be a 25-carry-a-game player and take that power back role," Davis said, adding that the staff answered all of his questions "perfectly."
Davis and his family will drive Friday to Stanford, where he will spend the next day with the Cardinal as well. But programs looking to sign Davis next season will need to make a quick impression. After his unofficial visits in April, he plans to make a commitment in May. With offers from schools such as Florida State, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Oklahoma, he will have plenty of options, but he also could have some help there.
Linebacker Michael Hutchings (Concord, Calif./De La Salle) has discussed the possibility of helping assemble a close-knit group of players that will eventually commit to the same school. The group includes Hutchings, Browne, cornerback Chris Hawkins (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) -- a USC commit -- and safety Su'a Cravens (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta), among others. It turns out that Davis could be among those others.
"We've been talking about recruiting and just some friendly stuff like that," Davis said with a laugh. "We've got something going on."
